A Legacy of Rentals by Craig Finn

A Legacy of Rentals, the fifth solo album from Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn, came out on May 20, 2022, through his own Positive Jams imprint and Thirty Tigers. Written in 2020 and recorded the next year with longtime collaborator Josh Kaufman producing and D. James Goodwin engineering, it swaps the horns of his last three solo records for a fourteen-piece string section arranged by Trey Pollard, with drum machines ticking underneath and Finn talking as often as he sings.

The subject is memory and how badly it holds up: his narrators keep circling back to people who have died or simply drifted off. Critics warmed to it, and the questions it raised stuck with Finn long enough to become a podcast, That's How I Remember It, about the tangle between memory and making art.
