Vena Sera, Chevelle's fourth album, came out on Epic on April 3, 2007, and it marked a changing of the guard in the Loeffler family business. Brother Joe had left in 2005, and bassist Dean Bernardini, Pete and Sam Loeffler's brother-in-law, made his first album with them. Michael "Elvis" Baskette produced again, the first time the Illinois band ever stuck with one producer for a second record.

Plenty of the songs grew out of older, unreleased material the band had kicking around, and the title is mangled Latin that translates roughly as "vein liquids" or "it's too late", which suits the mood. Pete Loeffler's voice swings from a hush to a roar over riffs that lurch and clamp down hard, and "Well Enough Alone" led the charge at radio. It opened softer in sales than This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In), but it kept moving and finally went gold in 2020.
