Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen's sixth album, came out on Columbia on September 30, 1982, and it's just Springsteen, alone, singing into a four-track tape machine in the bedroom of his house in Colts Neck, New Jersey. He meant the songs as demos for the E Street Band, but the full-band versions didn't measure up, so he put the tape out as it was; some of the leftovers turned up later on Born in the U.S.A.

What's there is bleak and hushed, stark lo-fi acoustic songs about working people who keep reaching and keep coming up short, plus a few outlaws, the killer Charles Starkweather among them on the title track. Flannery O'Connor's short stories pushed him back toward his own childhood. "Atlantic City" got his first music video, and the album went top 10 in America and Britain with no promotion from him at all. Its home-recorded DIY spirit has echoed through indie rock ever since.
