Get Awkward by Be Your Own Pet
Get Awkward is an album by Be Your Own Pet, released in 2008. 1 song from it has charted on rock radio countdowns, with 1 countdown appearance in total. The biggest is “The Kelly Affair”, on 1 list with a best position of #1978.
Get Awkward, Be Your Own Pet's second album, arrived on March 18, 2008, through XL Recordings in the UK and Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! in North America, two years after the self-titled debut had the Nashville garage punks fielding raves from NME and Pitchfork. Jemina Pearl still yelps like she's leading a riot in the school cafeteria, and Jonas Stein's guitar and John Eatherly's drums keep everything jittery, fast and gleefully unhinged.
The American edition came out three songs lighter: Universal's lawyers pulled "Black Hole", "Becky" and "Blow Yr Mind" as too violent, and they turned up later on the Get Damaged EP. Rolling Stone ranked the album 45th among 2008's best. It was nearly a farewell, too. The band broke up soon after, citing misogyny aimed at Pearl and burnout from the industry grind, and stayed apart until Jack White asked them to open some of his shows in 2021.
