Madonna, the second album from Austin, Texas's ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, came out on Merge Records on October 19, 1999, and it sounds like a band trying to trap its long, frantic live shows on tape. Conrad Keely, Jason Reece, Kevin Allen and Neil Busch, the group's first stable lineup, stack their guitars into a roaring wall that Trouser Press measured against My Bloody Valentine, with drum rolls and snare cracks whipping the songs forward.
Keely, a painter as well as a musician, supplied the cover: his portrait of the Hindu goddess Kali. The back sleeve carries James Neslo's painting honoring Ed Wicklander, a Seattle sculptor. "Mistakes & Regrets" is the one to start with, all that noise bent around a tune you can actually hum.
