The Allman Brothers Band, the group's debut, came out on November 4, 1969, on Capricorn through Atco. Duane Allman built the band in Jacksonville, Florida around a wild notion of two guitarists and two drummers, then brought in his brother Gregg and hauled the whole outfit up to Macon, Georgia. Tom Dowd was meant to produce but wasn't free, so house engineer Adrian Barber took the chair, and they cut and mixed the thing in two weeks at Atlantic Studios in New York.
And what a sound: Duane's slide and Dickey Betts's guitar twining over the double drum engine of Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson, Berry Oakley's bass rolling underneath, Gregg's organ and road-worn voice riding on top. Blues, jazz and country all go into the pot. "Dreams" drifts off toward jazz, while "Whipping Post" is the one crowds would come to holler for. Hardly anybody bought it at first, and the band disliked Barber's mix enough that Dowd later remixed it.
