Sound & Color by Alabama Shakes

Sound & Color, the second album from Alabama Shakes, arrived in 2015 as the follow-up to Boys & Girls, and it sounds like a band that has been handed the keys and told to wander. Blake Mills produced, and he leaves acres of air around the Athens, Alabama crew: Brittany Howard's voice slides from a hush to a full-throated wail, while Heath Fogg's guitar and Zac Cockrell's bass circle her like smoke.
The blues rock roots are still showing, but the edges are stranger now, all fuzz, echo and slow-cooked grooves that take their time getting where they're going. "Don't Wanna Fight" is the knockout, a taut, strutting thing that went on to win the Grammy for Best Rock Song, and the album opened at number one on the Billboard 200, the band's first trip to the top. It picked up six Grammy nominations in all.
