Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut came out on Elektra on April 5, 1988, and in a year of big hair and bigger drums it walked in with an acoustic guitar and quietly stopped everybody cold. The road there was unlikely. In 1987 fellow Tufts University student Brian Koppelman heard her play, found a demo of "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution", pushed it to radio stations, and she ended up signed to Elektra.

Plenty of producers passed on her, put off by the direction she wanted to go. David Kershenbaum didn't: he wanted to make an acoustic record, and he cut this one with her in eight weeks at the Powertrax studio in Hollywood. The sound is spare and uncluttered, with that deep, steady voice right up front, and most of the songs take on politics and social causes. "Fast Car" is the one that stops the room, a hushed, circling guitar pattern that pulls you along like the open road itself. "Baby Can I Hold You" is tender and plain, and "Mountains O' Things" has a loping, rolling sway.

Critics praised its simplicity, her voice and what she was singing about, and the public followed. It hit number one in the US and in the UK, Canada, Austria, New Zealand, Switzerland and Denmark, went six times platinum in the US, and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. "Fast Car", performed at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, cracked the US top ten. In April 2025 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry. Crossroads came next.
