Madonna, the self-titled debut from a downtown New York club singer, arrived on Sire on July 27, 1983, and it started with a demo tape. She and her Michigan boyfriend Stephen Bray cut four dance tracks and shopped them around the nightclubs until Danceteria's resident DJ, Mark Kamins, spun "Everybody", watched the crowd go for it and walked her into Sire, where Seymour Stein signed her up.

Warner Bros. producer Reggie Lucas started the album, but Madonna didn't like what she was hearing, so her boyfriend of the moment, John "Jellybean" Benitez, came in to finish and remix it. What came out is lean post-disco dance-pop about love and partying, built on the shiny new toys of the day: a LinnDrum machine, Moog bass and an Oberheim OB-X. "Holiday" was the breakout, "Lucky Star" and "Borderline" kept the party going, and it went five times platinum in the US.
