Blind Melon's self-titled debut arrived on Capitol on September 22, 1992, and it took its sweet time catching on. The band had come together in Los Angeles in 1990, when Shannon Hoon arrived from Indiana and fell in with guitarist Rogers Stevens and bassist Brad Smith, two Mississippi natives who'd landed in town a year before him. Christopher Thorn joined on second guitar, and after months of fruitless hunting for a local drummer, Stevens and Smith talked Glen Graham into coming out west to join them.
A four-song demo, The Goodfoot Workshop, got Capitol interested, and they signed in 1991. A first try at an EP with producer David Briggs, The Sippin' Time Sessions, came out far too polished for anyone's liking and was shelved, and by late 1991 they had decided to leave Los Angeles to make the real thing. With Rick Parashar producing at London Bridge Studio, they got down a loose, sun-dazed, neo-psychedelic take on alternative rock.
Hoon sings in a high, cracked, sweet-and-sour wail and blows harmonica, Thorn adds mandolin to the guitars, Smith even picks up a flute, and the whole band sounds like it's jamming on a porch with nowhere else to be. "No Rain" was the breakthrough, strummy and sunny on the surface; "Tones of Home" rolls on a heavier, bluesier groove, and "Change" is tender and plain-spoken. It was one of just two albums Hoon made with the band before he died of a drug overdose on the tour bus in New Orleans on October 21, 1995.
