Bad Company's self-titled debut arrived in June 1974, the opening shot from a supergroup built out of Free, Mott the Hoople and King Crimson. Singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke came over from Free, Mick Ralphs from Mott on guitar and Boz Burrell from King Crimson on bass, with Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant looking after them. They cut it in November 1973 at Headley Grange, using Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio.

This is hard rock with the fat trimmed off: Rodgers' bluesy growl, Ralphs' meaty riffs, Kirke's unhurried thump. "Can't Get Enough" struts, "Bad Company" broods, and "Ready for Love" is Ralphs reclaiming a song he had first recorded with Mott. It went top five on both sides of the Atlantic, and its songs still ride classic-rock radio.
