Emmis purchased the station from NBC in 1988. The station was mainstream but flipped to alternative in 1992, keeping the call letters. Bill Gamble was PD through 1997 followed by Alex Luke from KPNT St. Louis. Dave Richards from crosstown rocker WRCX became PD in 1998. Tim Richards was named PD in October 2001 after Dave Richards resigned.

At the end of 2005, Q101 played all of its the year-end countdowns from 1993 to 2005 over a two week period as part of its "13 Years in 13 Days" promotion.
